05 Mar What It Means to Be a Caregiver
Careers in healthcare, specifically in nursing and caregiving are in high demand. Did you know: there are more than 44 million people over 65 living in the United States, and by 2040 they will represent more than a fifth of the population? More than one million elderly live in nursing homes – and, many more regularly seek out medical treatment and care. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that nurse’s aides can expect faster than average job growth through 2020 and medical assistants can expect much faster than average job growth.
But, a career in caregiving is more than just job security. Whether you’re a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or any other type of caregiver, you make a difference. If you already work in the medical field or are interested in training for a career in helping people, it’s likely that you already have natural traits and abilities that make you a great match for work with the elderly. There is always a need for people who will care for our elderly population with competency and compassion.
However, some in healthcare may stray away from geriatrics because it’s “not as glamorous” as other medical fields. On the contrary, though, working with the elderly provides many intangible rewards that you simply won’t find in other healthcare sectors.
“One of the common benefits cited by those working with seniors is how much they learn from their patients. [They] have a wealth of knowledge to share and lots of time to do just that. Their tales can be like a hidden time machine.” – 3 Benefits of Working with Elderly
Working in caregiving gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. By assisting seniors with everything from personal care, like bathing or dressing, to medication administration and more, you uniquely help them retain their independence! You are always providing a vital service to your patients.
And, seniors are often very gracious and thankful to their caregivers. Many of the people you’ll care for look forward to their interactions with caregivers – it can truly be the highlight of their day. A warm and empathetic presence in their lives can mean the world.
